Regripping 101

How to Regrip Golf Clubs

Regripping golf clubs is relatively simple. An entire set can be done in less than 30 minutes and only the following four supplies are needed:

  • Vise and rubber vise clamps
  • Straight blade or utility knife
  • Two-sided grip tape (3/4" or 2")
  • Mineral Spirits Grip Solvent

Step-by-Step Regripping Instructions:

  1. Secure the shaft in a vise near the tip of the grip using a protective rubber vise clamp. Position the club face perpendicular to the floor in the playing position.

  2. Remove the old grip with a straight blade or stripper. (Use a utility knife with a hook blade on graphite shafts to avoid damage to the shaft.) Be sure to cut away from yourself at all times. Peel or scrape off the old grip and grip tape. Using a cloth and Mineral Spirits Grip Solvent, clean off the residue.

  3. Hold the new grip parallel to the shaft to determine how much area needs to be covered by the tape.

  4. Apply build-up tape on the shaft if an oversize grip is desired. Otherwise, use either 3/4" or 2" double-sided grip tape. If 3/4" tape is used, wrap in a spiral formation from the top of the shaft to the point where the bottom of the grip will be on the shaft. Remove the tape backing and cover the end of the shaft with extra tape.

  5. Cover the vent hole in the butt end with your finger or golf tee, and pour a generous portion of Mineral Spirits Grip Solvent inside the new grip. Close the open end of the grip with your hand and shake to cover the entire inside of the grip.

  6. Pour the excess Mineral Spirits Grip Solvent (through the vent hole) over the entire length of the two-sided tape. Apply generously. Use a tray to catch excess Mineral Spirits Grip Solvent for use on other clubs.

  7. Place the grip over the shaft butt (with the alignment pattern up) onto the club by squeezing the open end of the grip. This must be done while the grip tape is still wet with Mineral Spirits Grip Solvent.

  8. Push the grip entirely onto the club. Be sure the grip butt is against the shaft butt.

  9. The grip can now be properly aligned with the pattern square to the club face. (This must happen within a minute or so after applying the grip.)

  10. Allow grips to dry several hours before playing.
