Getting a Grip on the Basics

GripsThe grip is the only part of the golf club with which a player comes into direct contact and is far more critical to shot-making success than many might think. Grips influence the distance and direction of every golf shot, and every aspect of swing mechanics — from address to impact — so selecting the right type of grip is the first step in playing good golf.

From a material standpoint, grips fall into one of three categories — rubber, cord or thermoplastic. Rubber grips are, by far, the most common grip type in play today and feature a variety of patterns and compounds to offer different levels of traction and durability. However, thermoplastic compounds, such as the proprietary materials found in the Dual Density Crossline and Torsion Control grips, are quickly gaining popularity because of their extreme tack and stability. Cord grips are the most durable and provide extra traction for players in wet or damp conditions.
