Grip Q & A
A quick one-on-one with Bob Lamkin, president and CEO of Lamkin Corporation
Q: How often should a player regrip their clubs?
BL: Golfers who are playing or practicing once a week, should really think about regripping their clubs once a year. With the proper maintenance, for example, a golfer who plays less than 50 rounds a year can actually get two years out of our standard Lamkin Crossline grip. Simply by washing it down with a nice, soapy solution will bring back life to the material. I wouldn’t suggest any active golfer go more than two years without regirpping their golf clubs.
Q: Many golfers never even think about cleaning their grips. How important is that?
BL: How many morning rounds have we played where our grips are in the dew, in the sand trap or around the bunker? There are elements in grip compounds which attach to the different elements in the grass and to the sand trap dirt. You’d be amazed at the results if you just wiped that grip down periodically or scrub it down with a light, soft abrasion brush. With just a little cleaning, you will reactivate the material that provides grip tacking, and it’ll play like an entirely new grip. In fact, I wipe down my own grips during the course of every round.
Q: What do you see as the future of grip technology?
BL: I’m excited about it. For years, manufacturers have pushed the level of technology in clubheads and shafts and everyone is now taking notice that golf grips are a part of that technology drive. From Lamkin, you are going to see color. You are going to see functionality, and you are going to see materials that have traditionally been used outside of the golf grip category. Lamkin is an innovator and technology leader in the grip category and there’s a rhyme and reason to every thing we develop. We are introducing all of these benefits into the grip market and it is distinguishing us from our competitors. |
