Grip Q & A

A quick one-on-one with Bob Lamkin, president and CEO of Lamkin Corporation

Q. What is unique about the new Dual Density Torsion Control grip design?
A. Torsion Control has really revolutionized the grip category. For instance, at Lamkin, this has been the most popular introduction since the Crossline. When I sit down with our engineers, it’s really a team effort. What we’re emphasizing in the Torsion Control is actually a functional material difference that is out of the box. Torsion Control is really a producer of two very distinctive materials that give it its feel, durability and functionality.

Q. What are stabilizing bars?
A.
Stabilizing bars act as an inhibitor so the grip will not torque or move in your hand, especially for players with higher swing speeds. If you look at the Tour players and you see the swing speeds they generate, they can’t have a soft grip that would be spongy or would have a tendency to move in their hands at impact. For them at their swing speeds, a grip that’s moving in their hands could force the ball to be 50 yards off line. For players that have slower swing speeds, the grip still has great feel and comfort for them.

Q. There are a lot of soft grips on the market, many of which are too soft for most players. What different layers make up the Dual Density Torsion Control grip?
A.
What happens when grips get soft, they do get spongy. Two things happen. One, the grip prematurely wears because it’s so soft. The second thing that happens with a lot of players with too-soft grips is that they tend to squeeze the grip harder. They get tension in their hands that runs up their forearms, and that tension inhibits their turn and arm swing. It slows down your swing and robs you of distance. So, we developed a grip through Torsion Control that allows a player to have a very light, tension-free grip which is actually going to free up your turn and increase your swing speed. What the Torsion Control grip is actually going to do is allow you to hit the ball farther.
